High school poets to compete for grand prize in "Lyrical Lounge" competition

On Saturday, March 14 at 6 p.m. at the City Auditorium's Lon Chaney Theater, 27 students from six local high schools will compete in the City's "Lyrical Lounge" poetry competition for bragging rights and the grand prize of a sponsored after-prom party for their school. Nationally ranked slam poets "Slam Nuba" will be special guests at the event.

Lyrical Lounge is a new program sponsored by City Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services, Recreation Services Division designed to let teens at local high schools express themselves through poetry and give them more opportunities to participate in activities beyond traditional interests such as team sports. This program is one of the ways the City works to develop relationships with local school districts to support academic and extracurricular activities through youth activities.

"Youth have powerful voices and poetry is an art form that anyone can participate in regardless of ability, height, age, or race. We developed this opportunity for teens to give them the positive outlet and let their voices be heard," says Jaime Villarreal, Recreation Assistant and coordinator of Lyrical Lounge.

Poems must be of the students’ own creation and each student must come prepared with three poems to read. Each poet gets three minutes to read one poem and may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments. Judges will be from the City of Colorado Springs and other community members. The competition is open to the public and admission is $2 per person. The City Auditorium is located at 221 E. Kiowa Street downtown.
